This is a picture of the Henry William Vornholt family probably taken in1882. Pictured  are the parents, Henry William Vornholt and his wife Catherine Elizabeth Hieber, their children, Mary  Elizabeth, Rosa Anna, Anna Caroline, Frederick William, Louisa Jane, Emmeline Lucinda , and John Elias.
  • The  youngest child, the boy the lower right, is John Elias born in 1880.
  • Not pictured is Clara Ellen born in 1883, which helps to date this picture to around 1882.
  • Mary Elizabeth married Christian David See and is my great grandmother.
  • Married names of the daughters include; See, Brown, Klinsky, Miller, Zobel, and Baumgartner.
  • Rosa Anna Brown moved to South Dakota while the others including Frederick lived around the Ely area.
  • Three of the Vornholt children, Charles, Catherine, and Jacob, died in the summer of 1878 of Yellow Fever, and are buried with their parents in Fackler Cemetery.  They do not appear in the above family photo.

I have other pictures of the Vornholt family.  My email address is svedepo@gmail.com.
If anyone has other pictures of this family or has an interest in pictures I have including, baby, youth, some wedding, family photos some of which are unidentified, please contact me.

Unknown Area Photos

Submitted by Gayle Van Dyke

My maternal grandmother's family is from the Solon / Ely area and I have a few photos of people from my great grandmother's photo album who I cannot identify. I am requesting assistance from anyone with ties to the area who may be able to assist.  I would like to put some names to the faces with the eventual possibility of returning the original photographs to the family.

Below is a link to a multi-page PDF of about 20 images and I have numbered them to ease communication.

These photos come from the album of my great-grandmother, Anna Moel Stochl, 1869-1928.
Some background: she was married to James Frank Stochl 1863-1925.
His parents were Frantisek [Frank] Stochl and Katerina Brosh.
Her parents were Charles Moel and Anna Ilick.

Thank you so much.

Update

Thanks to Trustee Paul Deaton, we have received a copy of the original deed.  A deed dated March 14, 1860 from Frederick Wm. Vonhold and his wife, Anna Marie Elizabeth, transferred the land for Fackler's Grove Cemetery to the Big Grove Township Trustees for a sum of $12.50.  The deed was recorded on June 5, 1865. (We believe the surname is "Vornholt" since there are Vornholt family members buried in the cemetery.)

We have been very pleased with the positive response we have received from the surrounding community and are anxious for spring to come so we can begin the Fackler's Grove Cemetery restoration project. - B. Horak, ECHS

Fackler's Grove Cemetery Restoration

The Ely Community History Society, along with Robert Hach, Jr. of Ely, and the Big Grove Township Trustees are planning a project to restore the old Fackler's Grove Cemetery located near the intersection of Seven Sister’s Road and Polk Avenue south of Ely.  This is a pioneer cemetery with some of the earliest settlers of the area buried within it, but it is in a sad state of disrepair.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We are looking for individuals and organization, youth or adult, interested in helping with this project.  Once the weather clears in the spring of 2013 we plan on organizing an informational meeting for interested parties.

Please call Barb Horak at 319-848-4074, Clary Illian at 848-4963 or contact us via e-mail or mail if you wish to be involved in this project either with physical work or financial donation.
